When young Anton Stingley, who was born on Christmas day, awakens on Christmas morning, he finds that instead of the 600 toys he has requested his gift from Santa is one single, simple orange. Why has St. Nick ignored his 16-page list?

Inspired by a TV ad for the town's nastiest solicitor, Wiley Studpustle, six-year-old Anton decides it's time to take Pere Noel to court for breach of promise, with visions of an easy victory dancing in his head. (After all, how could a man with so many aliases be anything but guilty?)

With a twinkle in his eye and all-knowing "ho, ho, ho," Santa swaps his traditional red outfit for a conservative blue business suit and takes his place at what the local newspaper dubs "The Trial of the Century." With the whole town in attendance, Santa makes a decision that shocks the community: he is quitting the gift-giving game, a decision that leaves the whole town angry with Anton.

Is this the end of Christmas as we know it? Or is it the beginning of Anton making the transition from self-centered little boy to someone capable of appreciating the really important things in life? Maybe, just maybe, the solution to Anton's problems can be found in that most unusual of Christmas presents.

This contemporary Christmas tale, based on Don Gillmor and Marie-Louise Gay's award-nominated children's book The Christmas Orange, has all the hallmarks of a holiday classic.
